Why should I become a rural gp?

Rural generalism is a recognised medical specialty in Australia that allows you to become a specialist general practitioner with extended skill sets in a broad variety of medical disciplines of your choosing.

You should consider a career as a rural generalist if:

  • You enjoy the challenges of working in a diverse range of settings

  • You value continuity of care and building friendships with patients in a tight-knit setting

  • You can't decide what specialty you want to pursue or you enjoy everything

  • You are torn between a career in the community versus a career in the hospital

  • You value flexibility and work-life balance

  • You want to become a specialist/consultant within 5 years after medical school

A career as a rural generalist offers a range of benefits and opportunities in addition to standard general practice, for example:

  • The opportunity to develop and consolidate an extended scope of practice working more closely with local communities

  • The ability to work in both hospital and community-based care

  • Playing a primary role in addressing the needs of communities with decreased access to health care

  • Working alongside retrieval medicine teams

  • Being immersed into local communities and lifestyle benefits of country living

  • Increased earning capacity and access to financial incentives not available in metropolitan locations
